It’s not the most jaw dropping list of unrestricted free agents, but as of noon tomorrow (July 1) teams are free to start singing up players.
I’m skeptical how active the B’s could be even if they so chose due to their cap situation. They have actually added to their cap obligations so far this offseason and need to get restricted free agents Spooner and Connolly under contract in short order. Don Sweeney hinted himself a bit during his press conference today that the B’s will be looking to improve their team, for the present and future, through the trade market.
With Milan Lucic’s departure the B’s have a pretty big need at LW, and still have a need on the right side that existed all last season. Hoping Pastrnak, Connolly, and Smith can fill in OK moving forward, and Loui Eriksson is OK moving to his natural left side, Left Wing would be the priority. However, I’m comfortable saying there are no left wing candidates for the Bruins in free agency.
It will be an interesting day, but the underwhelming pool of players might mean the fireworks will come from trades as Sweeney suggested today. Let’s just hope the Bruins’ fascination with Chris Stewart ended with Chiarelli’s tenure.
